Railway Expansion Plan in São Paulo Underway with SP nos Trilhos Program - English
Railway Expansion Plan in São Paulo Underway Through the "SP nos Trilhos" Program
The Railway Expansion Plan in São Paulo is in full development through the SP nos Trilhos (SP on the Tracks) program, launched in 2024 by the State Government. With estimated investments of R$ 194 billion until 2038, the project includes over 40 initiatives to expand the railway network by 1,000 km, benefiting urban and intercity mobility.
Key Projects in Focus
Intercity Trains (TICs)
Northern Corridor (SP-Campinas): The concession has already been auctioned for R$ 14.2 billion, with operations expected to begin in 2031. The train will travel at 140 km/h, covering the 64-minute journey between Barra Funda and Campinas.
Western Corridor (SP-Sorocaba): A PPP (Public-Private Partnership) worth R$ 10 billion to build 100 km of tracks, reducing travel time from 2h10 by bus to just 60 minutes.
Eastern (SP-São José dos Campos) and Southern Corridors (SP-Baixada Santista): Feasibility studies are underway, with combined investments of R$ 25 billion and routes of up to 130 km.
Metro and Metropolitan Trains
Lines 19-Celeste, 20-Rosa, and 22-Marrom: New metro lines currently under construction.
Alto Tietê Lot (Lines 11-12-13): A PPP of R$ 13.3 billion to modernize 102 km of tracks and extend 22.6 km, benefiting 1.3 million users.
ABC Guarulhos Lot (Lines 10-14): R$ 18 billion investment for 70 km, integrating Line 14 with 27 new stations.
Monorail Line 15-Silver: Expansion to Jacu-Pêssego, connecting to Line 10-Turquoise, expected to be completed by 2027.
Challenges
Aging train fleet: 50% of trains on Lines 11-12-13 have a remaining lifespan of only 20 years.
Lack of specialized operators: A shortage of trained professionals to manage the growing network.
The program aims to reduce reliance on highways and promote sustainable transportation, aligning with national initiatives like the National Railway Plan (Plano Nacional de Ferrovias), which includes R$ 100 billion in investments for 4,700 km of railway expansion.
Strategic Importance of São Paulo’s Railway Expansion
Reducing Road Congestion: São Paulo’s highways are overburdened, and intercity trains offer fast alternatives (e.g., SP-Campinas in 64 minutes).
Environmental Sustainability: Railway transport is less polluting than road transport, aligning with global emission reduction targets.
Regional Integration: The project connects economic hubs (Campinas, Sorocaba, Santos) and inland cities, promoting balanced development.
Infrastructure Modernization: The initiative replaces outdated trains (50% of Lines 11-12-13 have only 20 years of service life left) with efficient systems.
Job Creation: The SP nos Trilhos program is expected to generate 150,000 jobs by 2038.
Attracting Private Investment: Models like PPPs and concessions (e.g., TIC Northern Corridor with R$ 14.2 billion) ensure funding without burdening the state.
Historic Recovery: The project corrects past neglect of railways in the 20th century, restoring their strategic role in national development.
These expansion projects also align with the National Railway Plan (Plano Nacional de Ferrovias), reinforcing São Paulo’s position as a logistics and environmental hub.
